Barn-Changko
Gwangyang, Korea
2019-2022
This project renovated and expanded a multi-family house built in 2002 into a neighborhood living facility. Although I had experience with several renovation projects prior to this one, the renovation of the reinforced concrete structure proved to be a significant personal
challenge. Design team task was to reuse the basement framing and redesign the ground
floor. Accurately understanding the site is crucial for any renovation project. Therefore, prior to commencing the design process, design team conducted multiple site visits to obtain the most accurate understanding of the existing structure. As per the owner's
request, the building was designed with exposed concrete. A lot of thought went into the north and west sides to experiment with the beauty and formability of exposed concrete.
Design team goal was to convey a modern Korean aesthetic through the study of form and pattern. To achieve this goal, design team extensively studied the construction details of the patterned formwork. After months of contemplation, design team proposed their devised
construction details, which were successfully implemented without any complications. The architectural planning stage required patience and creativity. The construction supervision stage demanded additional research, but with the assistance of others, design team were able to safely complete the project.
